Let’s hear it for lovers

It’s Valentine’s month, so let’s hear it for people who love passionately - and for the result of this passion, which often translates into…a delicious beverage.

The Rieflé family loves tradition. The family has carried on a tradition of wine-producing in the region of Alsace since 1850 and the sixth generation has just joined the family business. Their Riesling Alsace 2010, Bonheur Convivial, Rieflé, France, (SAQ code 10915327, $17.05) is worth discovering. It has scents of citrus and white flowers and also reveals a touch of exotic fruit. The taste is light, elegant and fresh, with a mineral note in the finish that is typical of Rieslings from Alsace. The wine is ideal with a dish of mussels in a white wine sauce, or with a cheese fondue.

As a person who loved nature and its fruits, Bernard Cazes converted the entire family vineyard to organic and biodynamic cultivation. It was not only a huge undertaking, but bore witness as well to his love of the earth - a legacy passed on to his son Emmanuel, who is now in charge of the vineyard. Discover the Domaine Cazes via the vintage Marie-Gabrielle 2009, Côtes du Roussillon, France, (SAQ code 00851600, $18.70).

A lover of the Québec terroir motivated by an ardent desire to create a product that reflects the best of this terroir, François Pouliot was one of the pioneers of ice ciders in Québec. The flagship product of the domaine La Face Cachée de la Pomme is the Neige Première. The 2009 (SAQ code 00733188, $16.10 for 200 ml) version speaks eloquently of the passion of its creators. Its nose is a virtual explosion of ripe apples and applesauce. Its smoothness in the mouth provides a perfect balance between sugar and acidity. This ice cider is a real delight that’s sensational with an apple dessert as well as with blue- or green-veined cheeses.
